Here are the prize-winners of the photo competition for the 2026 Australian & New Zealand Esperanto congress and summer school.
First prize – Helen Palmer

This photo immediately grabs you with the strong colours of the T-shirt and the striking green star. The composition puts you in the subject’s perspective, and draws you into the photo, which has a lot of depth due to the different layers (subject, hill, suburb, river, city). These layers also give the photo interest with their contrasting angles. Finally, the position of the subject slightly to the left nicely leads the eye along the river and into the distance.
It is worth mentioning that five of the ten photos submitted by Helen were in our “shortlist”.
Second prize – Joanne Cho

This photo captures a strong sense of movement with the people entering the photo from the right. This contrasts well with the solidity and stillness of the building. Because of the grey sky, the red elements stand out beautifully and give the photo interest. The eye easily follows the people to the building.
Third prize – Ana Alenić-Juretić

This photo has a bright and clean look, with a good sense of space. Its composition is excellent, and it makes you feel like a third person in the group. It would look right at home in a professional magazine.
