The 2027 World Esperanto Congress will be held in Melbourne

The Board of the World Esperanto Association (UEA) is pleased to announce that the 112th Universal Esperanto Congress (UK) will be held in Melbourne/Narrm, Australia, from 3 to 10 July 2027. After the successful congresses in Montreal (2022), Turin (2023, Arusha (2024), Brno (2025) and Graz (2026), the movement is once again crossing continents to celebrate its most important annual meeting.

The UK in Melbourne will have a special significance: it will be only the second time in Oceania after the memorable congress in Adelaide in 1997, so exactly 30 years later the Esperanto movement will return to the continent. This return symbolises the strength and sustainability of the international language and demonstrates the UEA’s commitment to ensuring that the UK is truly global.

Melbourne, the capital of the state of Victoria, is a modern and cultural centre of Australia, known for its rich cultural life, vibrant multicultural environment and world-renowned educational institutions, including the University of Melbourne. Founded in 1835, the city has been repeatedly called the “cultural capital of Australia” and hosts a large number of festivals and international events. It is also home to the UNESCO-listed Royal Exhibition Building with Carlton Gardens.

Melbourne offers a wide range of tourist experiences: the Yarra River, the historic Queen Victoria Market, St Kilda, colourful alleys with cafes and street art, as well as an outstanding gastronomic diversity. Locally it is often affectionately known as “Melbs”.

UEA respectfully acknowledges that Melbourne/Narrm is the traditional land of the Kulin Nation. The region, whose traditional name in the Woiwurrung and Boonwurrung languages is written as Narrm or Naarm respectively, is home to an Aboriginal history dating back at least 40,000 years. The traditional name reflects a deep culture and connection to the land, water and creation stories.

Melbourne has a very good infrastructure for international events: a modern congress hall, an efficient transport network, extensive accommodation and a hospitable, cultural atmosphere. For this reason, UEA accepted the invitation of the Australian Esperanto Association (AEA) and the Melbourne Esperanto Association (MEA), to whom UEA expresses its sincere gratitude. The Australian Esperanto movement has a long and active history, and Melbourne has been an important centre of the local movement for decades.

Will you also participate? Due to special subsidies obtained from the local organisers and the Congress Department, the congress date will be a little earlier than usual: the 112th UK will be held from 3 to 10 July 2027. UEA will reserve an exclusive discounted fee for those participants who will attend the 111th UK in Graz and immediately after it join the 112th UK in Melbourne/Narrm. In this way, we want to give more opportunity to loyal congress members who attend consecutive UKs. The online registration form for the 112th UK will appear at the beginning of the 111th UK in Graz. If you have not yet registered for the 111th UK, do not miss the opportunity to easily register using our online registration form: uk.esperanto.net.
